The research presented in this paper examined the importance of knowledge for family enterprise development that is created and transferred from external sources (counselling, publications, and education and training programs). External sources of knowledge that take the unique characteristics of family enterprises into consideration are well developed in many countries with family businesses tradition. In Slovenia as well as in many other transition countries, such external sources of knowledge are rare and still developing. The purpose of our research was to define the importance of new knowledge for owners/managers of family enterprises in Slovenia. We believe that the research cognitions presented in this paper may also be useful for other transition countries.
